The Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) is responsible for the development and implementation of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.
The seven Standards articulate what teachers are expected to know and be able to do at four career stages: Graduate, Proficient, Highly Accomplished and Lead. As a beginning teacher, I focus on the Graduate and Proficient stages. |
The Standards support the Melbourne Declaration (2008), which describes aspirations for all young Australians for the next decade. The main goals are equity and excellence and that all young Australians will become successful learners, confident and creative individuals, and active and informed citizens.
The Standards are grouped into three domains of teaching; Professional Knowledge, Professional Practice and Professional Engagement. In practice, teaching draws on aspects of all three domains.
The Teacher Toolkit is the one place where
AITSL's online resources can be found |
Illustrations of practice show what the standards look like in the class at different career stages.
|
The Self-Assessment Tool (SAT) is an online questionnaire enabling teachers at all career stages, in a range of contexts, to reflect upon their practice in accordance with the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.

Great Teaching Ideas is a place for teachers and school leaders to share and interact with useful and innovative ideas with other educators from across Australia.
